Hand and Eye is a full service design/build firm in central Vermont that specializes in small, energy efficient structures, renovations, and custom woodwork. The firm is owned and operated by Zach McLuckie. The designs and custom woodwork are made in the company's studio/workshop located in  Roxbury, Vermont.

Zach will first work with clients on the design, then the project planning, and finally the ever exciting build phase. At Hand & Eye, we take pride in our work. We're committed to quality and have a reverence for craft. We specialize in the details, demanding precision from ourselves as craftspeople, designers, and representatives of Hand & Eye.

 

Hand & Eye welcomes collaborations with other designers, architects, and builders on their custom homes, renovations, cabinetry or built-in projects, as well as custom furniture or architectural millwork.  

 

Perhaps, most importantly, Zach brings a personal dedication to our environment and our planet’s future to each project. He uses sustainably sourced, ecologically sound materials, and incorporates local materials when possible. Both the physical materials, as well as the customers material investment, are always honored and respected.

Zach's exploration of craft started as a child in his mother's basement workshop, where she would restore antique furniture. His first business, a custom furniture business, was launched out of that basement workshop thanks to the patronage of his grandparents, aunts and uncles. The journey took a more serious turn in high school where Zach had a job at a local luthier's shop. This is where Zach obtained most of the fundamental woodworking skills that he carries to this day.

 

After briefly attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Zach chose to follow his passion for travel and went out to see the world. Making his way around Europe, the US, and Mexico, he often traded carpentry work for room and board. In 2009, Zach got his first conventional job as a carpenter working in the building trades. In 2011, he moved up to Vermont to further his education in Design and Build at the Yestermorrow school where he obtained a certificate in sustainable Design/Build. Since moving to Vermont, Zach has had the privilege of working with many wonderful companies holding titles like: carpenter, lead carpenter, project manager, lead cabinet maker, and shop manager. Zach has been teaching at the Yestermorrow school since 2024. After 17 years of cumulative professional experience, Zach chose to start Hand and Eye in the summer of 2026.

Zach lives in Fayston, Vt. with his partner Meg, and daughter Joan. He enjoys playing music with his rock band The Woolies, as well as gardening, reading, and taking his 2 dogs on their daily walks.
